Let’s say that you’re sitting across from a poker online opponent who plays very few hands. Judging by how rarely he plays his online poker cards, you can probably guess that he’s a very tight player, so you make a mental note of it and wait until he enters a pot. When he does, pay attention to how he plays his poker hand-you know that he’s confident of it, because it’s one of the few hands that he’s decided to play, but what’s more important is how he decides to play it. If he has a tendency to limp in with his hands and seems more comfortable check than betting, you can bet that he’s a more passive player. Tight passive players are loath to give away their chips. On one hand, they don’t make a habit of throwing their chips away with sub-prime pocket cards, but they face the very present danger of blinding out, especially if someone notices how they play. Tight-passive players are generally new players who don’t want to draw attention to themselves or are casual players who don’t like taking risks. Either way, these guys are extremely vulnerable to bluffs and are generally an easy read-they only bet when they have the nuts.

The Real Reason for Automated Shuffling Machines
We are told as habitual online poker players that automated shuffling machines are used for our benefit. We are told that they make the game more accurate, that they enhance the odds, and that they ensure that the online poker casino is not taking more than their fair share. While these are all perfectly good reasons to put down the cards and pick up the machine, they are not the real reason that you can find automated shuffling machines in casinos across America. The real reason has to do with the deep American tendency to sue when things do not work out perfectly. I was shocked to learn the other day that automated shuffler machines were instituted when dealers started to get repetitive stress injuries from dealing the cards all day. These injuries left the casino open to hefty lawsuits. As we all know from our side of the table, poker casinos do not like to give out money to anyone. This led to the development and eventual institution of automated shuffler machines that were designed to reduce work related industries. With technology on their side casinos could rest easy that they would not be paying out a small fortune in lawyer’s fees and settlements. They had finally found a way to guarantee a house edge.
The Suckout Event of the Year – Aka WSOP 2009 Final Table
I feel cheated by poker once again. The “best player in the world” this year is a 21 year old kid who sucked out at the final table as a 4-1 underdog, twice, getting his money in preflop with a pair-under-pair situation. The guy he beat heads up won two 70/30’s at the final table during his mindlessly aggressive donk-and-pony poker show. For those lawmakers who are trying to get casino poker regulated, I feel terrible for you. It’s sure going to be hard to convince people that poker is a skill game after this monstrosity! But in all seriousness, sometimes the end of a poker tournament does take a lot of luck. If you don’t cold deck someone, you’re likely beating them in a coinflip or a close race situation. So even though some major injustice happened at this year’s final table we can associate the outcome to variance and stack sizes. The good thing about this WSOP is that the average Joe can once again feel confident in the game of poker. Lately the poker world has been taken over by young internet poker savants and the recreational players have fallen to the wayside. If a logger from Maryland can beat nearly 7,000 people then that says something about the game. And we all know that whoever wins the WSOP is not the best player in the world, they just happen to have had the best outcome. On any given day anyone can win a poker tournament. In this series, the winners obviously had some luck, but they also had to manage their chip stacks over the course of an entire week. They had to play smart and responsibly. The same thing goes for your everyday tournament; anyone can win. Even the most recreational players these days know what it takes to win a tournament. If you are blessed with a little luck and have the patience to carry yourself out to win, you’re all set. Hopefully now the regular Joe’s will find themselves back to the casinos!
Bluffing in Limit Hold Em
Bluffing in a game of limit hold em is a very different enterprise than the way it goes down in a game of no limit. Though on their faces the two games have the same structure, the limited betting causes a much different system of value in betting and calling, making a bluff in a limit online poker game much more difficult, and often less profitable, than a no limit game.
Often a bluffing situation comes out of finding yourself in a hand that you failed to make a draw. Bluffing when you’ve missed a flush or straight and find yourself with no way to win without betting can often work in no limit, where you can vary the bet size to scare your opponent, but in limit, on the river often the pot odds of calling another final bet are often so high that folding is almost possible. Trying too hard to steal in limit online poker games can be a great leak for those used to buying their way out a losing situation.
In general, playing tighter in limit, sticking to made hands and letting the others try to bluff and draw is a much more profitable situation that the more wild tactics available to the no limit online poker player.
Satellite Poker Games
poker online tournaments with large entry fees and many players often offer “satellite” games as a way to enter. What are satellite poker tournaments? These are smaller tournaments, held at online poker rooms and sometimes in casinos that have lower entry fees and where contestants vie for a prize that includes an entry to the larger pokertournament with bigger prizes.
Satellite tournaments came into the public spotlight when Chris Moneymaker won the 2003 World Series of Poker. He entered a satellite with the intention of wining the second-place money but instead finished in first and won the $10,000 seat in the Main Event. The advantage of satellite tournaments is that the entry fees are much lower than the main event’s cost. Satellites allow those with more constrained budgets to make a run a bigger events. It helps build the field of the more expensive tournament with the bigger prize money. The entries into the satellite basically cover the cost of one entry into the main event plus prize money for those who finish behind first place. Many online poker rooms offer satellite tournaments to their bigger events. They are also popular in casinos, which often offer the satellite opportunity a few hours or days before the scheduled bigger event. If your bankroll won’t allow you to play the big tournaments, then check out the satellite opportunities that may be offered.
Let Go of the Face Cards
There is a tendency among new Texas Holdem poker players to hold onto any card that has a face card. The problem with this tendency among the inexperienced is that they will hold onto any pocket set with a face card, even if it is paired with a low valued second card. This is particularly dangerous when the low valued card is not even in the same suit as the face card. I know that it may seem like a good idea when you first start playing poker to hold onto cards that could make a high valued pair. But let’s look at that scenario for a moment so that you can see its flaws. If you need another card to create your high valued pair, than you need the community cards to make up your hand. There is four of each face card in a deck. Supposing that you are playing at a full poker table, there is a very strong chance that someone else has either the same face card or one of a higher valued in their pocket cards. That means that they will beat you in the showdown and that you would have wasted your money to get there. Keep your bets and let go of the face cards.
Limit Poker Shorthanded
Limit online poker, just as its name implies, provides limited opportunity to leverage betting action in live cash games. Because each bet amount is limited to a fixed amount, and typically capped at three raises per round of betting, it is difficult to chase away loose or passive players with a bluff. Playing tight with premium cards is the best strategy in that situation. However, a shorthanded limit table presents a completely different arena where bluffing can win the pot. When playing shorthanded poker online, your pocket cards automatically have higher value than in full ring games. Since the bets are limited and there are fewer players, you can and should see more flops. You can widen your range of starter hands. When playing in shorthanded limit games, you can also act more aggressively pre-flop when you have any decent hand. Make the other players pay to see the flop. You are building a better a pot, and if you connect, have turned a good profit. In a shorthanded limit poker game, you should be willing to continue beyond the flop whenever you have a small pair, two over-cards or a good draw. If you have noticed that your opponents tend to fold after the flop, then exploit this weakness and bet it. By playing a more aggressive loose game in shorthanded limit poker, you can win multiple pots, sometime small ones, that add up to a tidy profit.

Operating from Early Position in Poker
Early position is the most difficult position to play from. Learning the nuances in play from early position will allow you to be more profitable over the long run in all types of game situations, even in online poker.
In no limit Hold’em, the most commonly played poker game on the Internet, early position in ring games is a death trap and should be navigated with caution. In a live game situation, mixing up your game and raising from early position with weak hands is a good way to keep your opponents off balance and skew their view of your playing style, but on the internet, this is highly unprofitable. The reason for this is that many full ring players are playing multiple tables and only playing strong hands from position. If you try to get tricky and open from under the gun, you are likely going to either pick up the blinds, or run into a strong hand. Knowing this, you can proceed with caution and raise from early position with the understanding that you will have to fold if a tight to average poker player re-raises or calls, and you fail to connect strongly with the flop.
In live situations where image is much more pertinent, mixing in a few raises from early position throughout your session is a much more profitable move. As previously stated, this will allow you to perpetuate whatever image you desire. Showing down a weak starting hand to scoop a pot will make opponents think you are crazy, and will allow you to then get paid off when you raise a strong hand later in the session.
