A Momentous Event in the History of Technology

The fortieth anniversary of a momentous event in the history of technology was celebrated on 2nd September. On this day, forty years ago, the first link was established between two computers with the help of a 15 feet cable at the University of Los Angles in California. This small beginning slowly gave rise to the internet revolution, which has changed our lives significantly over the years, and the pace of growth does not seem to be slowing down at all.

The next major leap forward for the internet happened on 29th October, 1969, when two machines present at two different geographical locations were successfully connected. Experts consider this event to be more important in the history of global communications than the previous one. The two computers were connected and data was sent in packets to be reassembled at the other end.

The “World Wide Web” that we are so familiar with today was the brainchild of Tim Berners Lee. It is because of this one innovative idea proposed in the year 1989 that we can use the internet to fulfil our myriad needs, be it a broadband blog, or gathering facts on various subjects or mere entertainment. While celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the internet, one can’t help but wonder about how much we have progressed in this field in just forty years.

Music Downloaded through the Vodafone Network to be DRM-Free

In a welcome move, Vodafone has announced that it has entered into deals with several major record labels allowing music downloads to Vodafone users without any DRM protection. The companies included in the deal are Sony, Universal Music and EMI.

Many people who download music often from the Internet and feel restricted due to DRM would appreciate this move. DRM, which stands for Digital Rights Management, is a copy protection system that stops music files from being played on any device other than the one device for which the file is downloaded. The main aim of this technology is to prevent illegal file sharing, which is a major form of music piracy. However, as most users these days use multiple devices, the DRM protection is keeping them from enjoying their music on all their devices, and this has become a major cause of frustration for many users.

The deal makes Vodafone the first mobile network operator to allow its users across the globe to download DRM-free music to their devices. The company has also clarified that the customers who have already bought DRM protected WMA files will also be allowed to upgrade to DRM-free music at no additional charge. If you interested in mobile broadband as a means to access music on the move, for more info on the latest mobile broadband and laptop deals, try a dedicated website such as Mobile Broadband Genie.

Pieter Knook, Vodafone Internet Services Director, said that this was an important move because music has become very important to a large number of the company’s customers. He added that by doing away with DRM, Vodafone is allowing customers to download music to a device and then transfer it to any other device of their choice.

What Direction Will VoIP Take?

It seems that nothing can stop the rise and rise of Voice over IP. Driven by increasingly widely available low cost broadband VoIP has become one of the fastest-growing applications on the Internet. But apart from cheap international calls, there are other factors which have contributed to this hugely popular way of making calls. There is clearly a trend toward more innovative and more mobile services and this looks likely to ensure that demand for Internet telephony continues to develop. It is estimated that there are already around four million VoIP UK users in the UK, not including business subscriptions.
Key figures in the industry point to the advent of ADSL broadband connections that do not require line rental for a standard phone line (naked ADSL), and number portability between conventional and IP phone services as the two key developments that will bring inflate the profile of VoIP to new heights.

In fact the effect VoIP has had has been so pronounced that some have suggested that it may not be long before users can dispose of their traditional landline telephones completely in favour of a broadband phone.

Taking a more practical view, there are issues that will need to be addressed before that can happen. In the UK VoIP providers like Vonage or VoIPTalk will have to review both security and ease of use, as well as continue to deliver a convenient and financially attractive service. They certainly offer cheap calls already but, what else do they need to do to ensure a bright future for VoIP?
As the Internet is a huge public space the VoIP traffic is no more immune from attack than any other data. Security is a concern for many users, particularly in the business community and the means to develop security for users would be a welcome step in securing the long-term future of VoIP.

The ease of use issue may not remain a hindrance to progress now that handsets that work on mobile networks and, via WiFi or Bluetooth links, over VoIP are now taking their place in the shops. This raises the prospect of using reduced rate VoIP services at home, in the office or at a WiFi hotspot, but still retaining the flexibility of mobile coverage when out and about.

Some VoIP companies are now selling these handsets, and have set up joint arrangements with wireless hotspots so that their customers can make and receive calls in public places without the need for a PC.

Expect to see some of the restrictions of such handsets i.e. difficulties in hotspots that use web pages for authentication to be addressed very soon.

The advance of newer networking technologies will further reduce the distance between fixed, mobile and VoIP services. Wireless broadband services, in particular WiMax, could create city-wide wireless hotspots, making it possible to make mobile VoIP calls in much wider areas.

FileSharers grow fewer with new ISP determination

ISP’s and UK music labels alike have grown furious with file sharers, and the detriment which they bring to the market. Now more than ever, these organizations are determined to clamp down on these individuals, by whatever means necessary. In pursuit of this, six of UK’s leading ISPs have engaged in a deal with UK music labels, as they collaborate against file sharing. This program, at its conclusion, expects to condemn over six million filesharers, in various regions across the United Kingdom.

Additionally, these organizations have teamed with 7Digital, to offer an alternative to illegal media acquisition. The interface gives the customers the permission, and access to high quality music, at rather reasonable cost to the consumer. Because the files are packaged as DRM-free mp3s, they are compatible with all digital media players, as long as they are transferred legally.

Customers can choose one of three options made available through 7Digital. Broadband users can buy MP3s directly from their broadband providers and receive monthly bills; or purchase a broadband subscription with bundled services or they can buy a partnership with 7Digital.com.

With 7Digital, ISPs can offer their existing customers music downloads through a legal platform. This new range of services is termed “a natural step” by Ben Drury, CEO of 7Digital. Further. Drury points out the existing billing relationship which customers hold with their operators, which makes it simple to add this new system to subscription plans.

This program offers a practical mode of opposing piracy, while offering a full range of legal media, great prices, and top quality service. This service will be rolled into the existing ISP package, which already includes email, anti-virus, firewall, online backup and much more.
